mend is by calling the officer either Chief Land Surveyor'
or "Officer in charge of Crown Lands".
I think a suitable man should be obtained for
a salary of $200 per month with exchange compensation. It may
however be found necessary to offer better terms but that may
be left to the judgment of the Home Authorities.
The post, hitherto known as "Superintendent of
Crown Lands', has unfortunately been entirely omitted from the
Estimates, instead of being retained under a different title,
and it would therefore be necessary to make supplementary pro-
vision in the event of my recommendation being approved.
Should it receive the approval of His Excellen-
cy the Governor, I will submit for transmission to the Crown
Agents further particulars as to the duties of the office.
I have,&c.,
(Sa.) W.CHATHAM,
Ag. Director of Public Works.
